Small Businesses Making Noise in the Construction Industry

On January 23, 2024 USACE held an Industry Day for the forthcoming Camp Pendleton Area Maintenance Support Activity (AMSA) and Vehicle Maintenance Shop (VMS) requirement. There were a plethora of small businesses that attended, and have been highlighted below, that have a wide array of services to offer in support of this impending effort. Services such as construction services, oversight services, engineering services, and design-build services are some of the many specialized areas in which vendors can offer their assistance as it relates to construction services. AlphaBrook has highlighted the following small and other socioeconomically disadvantaged businesses that have recently been awarded construction contracts from various government agencies and/or attended the USACE industry day. Firms interested in supporting future construction services related opportunities should continue to monitor the following vendors as they are making significant waves in this realm.

Borja Engineering and Construction (Borja): In July 2023, this 8(a) small business was awarded a Roof Repairs contract by the Navy which is valued over $1.3M. Borja has a background in construction services, engineering construction, facility maintenance, project management, and HVAC services, solidifying that this firm has a pertinent footprint as it relates to construction services. Considering this vendor’s recent award and its array of construction capabilities, it is clear that Borja will be one to keep an eye on in future construction services endeavors.

CJW Construction: This HUBZone small business has an impressive background in the construction realm, which includes green construction design and build, industrial and commercial buildings, new building construction, facilities and building construction, and many more aligned services. In fact, due to this firm’s extensive areas of expertise, CJW Construction was recently awarded a Civil Engineering Construction Santa Ana Mainstem contract valued at $31.8M in June 2021 by USACE. As CJW Construction continues to make strides in the construction field, this industry partner will be one considered as a competitor in future endeavors.

Straub Construction: Straub Construction is an SBA-certified small business vendor that recently obtained a Construction of a New Brown Field Border Patrol Station contract for over $51M in April 2020 from USACE. This vendor provides many solutions that have supported its success in the construction realm, including construction services, facility maintenance, project management, and many more aligned services. Based on this firm’s recent contract win and the offerings it provides, it is undeniable that Straub Construction is a valuable industry partner to consider aligning with in upcoming construction services efforts.

Ahtna: Ahtna was awarded an Elevator Modernization contract in June 2023 by GSA and is valued at over $11M. This 8(a) small business is an established firm that offers construction services, design and build services, engineering services, and project management services. Vendors seeking to support government agencies on upcoming construction contracts should be sure to keep tabs on Ahtna, as this firm is likely to be one that will be highly competitive in this landscape.

Wu & Associates: Wu & Associates is a SBA-certified small business that in September 2023  was awarded a contract for construction services by DOI valued at $40M. This recently awarded contract is undoubtedly supported by this firm’s meticulous background which includes general construction, design/build, project management and strategic teaming. As Wu & Associates continues to showcase its knowledge in the construction services realm, this firm is likely to be a strong competitor or a beneficial teaming partner for future construction support efforts.

Duwright Construction: Duwright Construction is an 8(a) small business that was recently awarded a contract for architecture, engineering, and construction by Navy valued at over $4M in March 2023. Prava Construction: Prava Construction is an SBA-certified small business that provides a wide range of services including, but not limited to, commercial construction, design-build, pre-construction services, renewable energy, and engineering services.  In fact due to this firm’s widespread background, they are likely to be a competitor for the upcoming USACE AMSA and VMS contract, even though they have not developed a sizable portfolio within USACE. Prove Construction will be one to consider partnering with or anticipate as a competitor in future endeavors.

Calajl: Calajl is an SBA-certified small business that is continuing to develop its footprint within USACE and the federal government completing construction services type work. Calajl has a detailed background that includes design-build, construction services, project management, and oversight. Vendors seeking to support government agencies on upcoming construction efforts in the future should be sure to keep an eye on Calajl, as this firm is likely one that will be highly competitive in future endeavors.

Proselect Construction: Proselect Construction has a meticulous background that includes general construction, renovations, landscaping, project management, and oversight services. This SBA-certified small business is continuing to grow their portfolio within USACE and the federal government and thus has not amassed a large quantity of prime contracts within USACE or the federal government. As Proselect Construction continues to showcase its knowledge in the construction services realm, this firm is likely to be a strong competitor or a beneficial teaming partner for future construction support efforts.
